The Jawaharlal Nehru and Narendra Deva Legacies in the Socialist and National Movements in India: A Preliminary Exploration

19th February 2023 happens to be the 67th death anniversary of Acharya Narendra Dev, a prominent freedom fighter and a “socialist” who collaborated throughout his life with Jawaharlal Nehru. He was interned in the Ahmednagar Fort during 1942-45 when Nehru wrote The Discovery of India. Nehru especially acknowledged his co-prisoners’ contributions in his magnum opus.

After independence in 1948, the Socialists, a group within Congress, separated and so did Acharya Narendra Dev. His group’s socialist ideas continued to influence policies Nehru pursued.
